Review: My First Deep Dive Into the World of Fourth Wing

Disclaimer: If you did not read it yet: there will be spoilers. I also am writing this as if whoever does read it, knows what I’m talking about. Basically, I assume anyone who’s here read the book. So, I’m not going into too much detail explaining terms that one would already know about after reading. Feel free to comment or message me about any questions though!

“It’s Been My Honor.”

I cannot be the only one who cried when this happened. I had so much hope for Liam. He just had so much potential as a character in this series. But then again, Rebecca killed off Dylan who has a whole fiancé waiting for him. They had plans, he wore their ring on a chain. If that wasn’t a big warning flag on how easily people will die off, not sure what is.

Fourth Wing is the first of FIVE books in the Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros. FIVE, and we’re only about to get book THREE. Just after these first two, I know we’re in for a world of heartbreak. But let’s get into my thoughts on this first books.

Book 1 follows the FMC Violet Sorrengail. She’s the complete opposite of who you would think would survive in a hardcore death college. She’s frail, her bones break and joints pop from nothing. Yet, her mother (who’s the general) forces her in. I mean, mama Sorrengail really showed no mercy there. Even after Violet’s older sister Mira tried to talk her out of it. But lets be real, to have the two only family members you have argue right in front of you about how weak and frail you are? I would be PISSED. Violet gets agitated, and at that point, I knew she would do everything to prove them wrong. And boy was I right.

Violet then proceeds to completely ignore the one thing her sister said NOT to do. And that’s interact at all with Xaden Riorson. Within reason, of course. Mama Sorrengail is responsible for not just Xaden’s father’s death, but the execution of everyone who was a part of the rebellion. We also find out later on that General Sorrengail was also the one who marked all 107 scars on Xaden’s back. Did I not say she shows no mercy? Needless to say, Mira had a good reason to tell Violet to stay away from him. He has every reason to want her dead. BUT, we all know how true that actually is HA!

We then have miss Violet bonding with Tairn, who…plot twist. IS XADEN’S DRAGON’S MATE?!?! But even before then, we start to get little sparks in their interactions. Especially after that little encounter when Violet witnesses the marked ones gathering at night by the tree. These two have CHEMISTRY. Oh, I would read and silently giggle at these two’s bickering. It was hilarious.

Fast forwards, THEY KISS. Obviously, they played it out to be all because their dragons were having ~a moment~ and they can’t completely block out those feelings. But…lets call it as it is. BS! We all know they wanted to even before Tairn and Sgaeyl had that little moment together. I was and still am a sucker for their chemistry AFTER the kiss. Oh jeez, it was soooo palpable and hilarious.

And now we get more to the nitty gritty. We have war games, Violet kills Jack Barlowe (finally, the man deserved it) and she manifests her signet. Lightning! Then…Violet and Xaden sleep together! YASSSS, finally. The suspense was killing me. He also starts to trust her little by little and tells her when she asks about him Garrick and Bhodi going on night missions. He only tells her that they went to Athebyne, but that was enough for DAIN to UNWILLINGLY take her memories. AND TELL HIS FATHER. UGH. Xaden also had Liam Mairi become Violet’s bodyguard to protect her from assassination attempts. She hates it at first, but then they end up actually becoming friends.

Fast forward to the last part of war games, freaking AETOS sent them to Athebyne, basically to die. They arrives and found that letter. Oh that made my blood boil. Making them choose between saving innocents or continuing with War games. At this point Violet finds out that they have been supplying the gryphon flyers with daggers to kill VENIN. This sounds so crazy to Violet, but she sadly ends up witnessing first hand how very real these “folklore” venin are. They decide to stay and help this village of innocents against the Venin and their Wyvern, but there’s casualties. And this is where I cried. Deigh, Liam’s dragon dies saving Tairn and Violet from a wyvern. And as we all know, a rider without its dragon is dead. Oh, the devastation. The sorrow. It was written so well, I actually felt like I lost him. It was HEART BREAKING. Violet channels this into vengeance and uses Andarna’s time ability to kill one of the venin, but not before she stabs her with a poisoned dagger. She still manages to kill the rider; therefore, killing all the wyvern she created. But that’s the last she remembers before passing out.

Lastly, we get the last chapter in Xaden’s POV. We find out that he risked everything to go to Aretia. To the poison master and mender he knew…BRENNAN. EXCUSE ME??? I screamed. What a plot twist. We end with Violet being pissed at Xaden for keeping this all from her (within reason) and the last quote of the entire book: “Welcome to the revolution, Violet.” AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Definitely not for young audiences. Parents: I won't tell you what to let your kids read or not read, but I can recommend that they maybe not read this until they've at least reach high school. Even then, some might still feel its intended for an older audience than that.

Anyways, HAPPY READING!

Stay tuned for my next review: Iron Flame (book 2 of the Empyrean Series) Hoping to have it out before Onyx Storm!
